Problems Problems Problems

Ok so now after thinking everything was ok with the spitting
thru the carb I discovered another mystery. It starts with no
hesitation at all, idles perfectly, when I give it a little gas it
dies? Checked the plugs and they are black sooty dry sooty
not wet. After researching what the issue could be I took the
carb off , took it completely apart, cleaned everything , made
sure all ports were free of any blockage, blew the carb out,
installed new gaskets and it runs the same. Keep in mind this
carb I found on ebay, it looked similar to the one that came on
the engine (which I broke the mounting flange) and the fuel
pump is a used one I also found on ebay for 20.00 So after a
year and a half of wrenching I refuse to give up so I plan on
buying a new fuel pump for a VH4D , a brand new carburetor
for a VH4D , new spark plugs. After putting over 5K into this
machine what"s another K ? I just hope with all these new
parts the problem goes away, I can"t help but wonder where
the issue was with the old stuff though? Some say if it idles ok
but dies when you give it gas, your not getting enough gas?
Who knows maybe a new fuel pump and carb correct with the
engine will work?

Yes, it must be something else going on , after switching parts
from the other carb I broke and fuel pump as well both parts
are kinda hybrid/ Frankenstein so I figured I would scratch
both parts, get some new plugs and start over with brand new
parts that belong on a VH4D

Try closing the choke when you open the throttle. I had a motor do the same thing as yours but would run with the choke closed, was a leak in the fuel line and it couldn't get enough gas to the carb. without the extra 'suck'.

Black and sooty plugs say it is running way to rich. Have you made sure the air cleaner is not clogged up and that the carb main jet is not set to far open

Not adjustable sounds like it may have to big a jet or the jet has been drilled out or maybe even missing

Scott.
You could have a electrial problem like weak spring on points causing them to bounce at higher speeds. You could also have a bad condenser doing same thing and yes I know new parts were installed.Ralph

Hi Ralph,
Yeah I thought about that however, about 2 weeks ago I was able to got the RPM"s up but there was a lot of spitting , back firing thru the intake, now ithe spitting has stopped at idle but I can"t get the RPM"s up. That"s why I figured it was an issue with the carb or fuel pump, which makes sense with the hodgepodge of mixed parts they have, hopefully new plugs, new carb, new fuel pump, new air cleaner will bring this puppy home.

Sometimes having your points set too close will keep the engine from getting any speed up before it sputters and cuts out. Also make sure they are clean. If you condenser is going bad you may find that the ground side of the points are pitted. hope this helps you.
