VH4D engine oil opinions

Hi all,

Now that everything is in order I"m ready to finally break in the engine and change the oil, the manual says use 10w-30 but remember the manual I found on ebay and it"s from 1972 . There has been a lot of changes since then with synthetic oils and all. To be honest once I break it in, change the oil and filter, it will be going to Alabama to our property and basically be used for a week or so for a few hours , I will winterize it, then it will sit on the trailer covered up until the following year, so what kind of oil should I use?

Nothing is wrong with it however, I was just fishing around to see if I would be better off using a synth oil . my main concern is when I tow it down south and its sitting all year until I can make it down there again will I need to change the oil everytime no matter what kind I use? so regular or synth oil is the question?

I have a new Kohler standby generator. It has a 27hp engine and Kohler recommends 5w30 synthetic oil. They also recommend you change the oil every 100 hours or once a year. One of Kohler's service tech's wanted $300.00 to change the oil and service the air filter. I did it for about $21.00 with a new Kohler filter and 2 quarts of oil. The oil cost $2.59 per quart. I bought 8 more quarts on Tues before the prices go up. It's
programmed to start once a week for 20 minutes. When Sandy hit it ran for 26 hours since power was off. Hal
PS: You can get it in several weights 10w30 or 10w40. You may not need the real light oil in AL.

I forgot to tell you my wife helped with oil change as the drain pan wouldn't hold 2 quarts and she watched it so I wouldn't overfill the pan.
I was turning the drain valve on and off. The engine was also hot since I changed the oil after a 20 minute run. This was in Aug and the oil was nice and thin and hot. Hal

10-4 Hal, I think im going to go with 10w-30 but synthetic instead of regular. not too sure about not needing a thinner weight in Alabama all that ice they just got? LOL but that's very rare, all the issues this project has given me I just want to treat the engine right and prevent a repeat of what ive gone thru however, I do understand although the engine is rebuilt it still has the characteristics of a 1971 engine and needs some attention from time to time.

I have one of these to but for some strange reason my best friend looked at it and said it looks like a V.W. bug engine. I guess air cooled is just like those V.W. bug engines right or wrong. He say's that regular 30 wait oil because you want it to thicken up to go where it is needed. Then he laughed and said you might want to run a 10 -30 for that cold weather for protection when engine is cold. I think it is what you perfer.
