8n front mount distributor

Working in distributor. Replaced points condensor rotor and
cap. My question is when I out it back on does it make which
way the rotor is turned to ensure it fires. Also last cap had
grooves cut in it is this normal.

If your asking does the distributor fit back on more the none way the simple answer is no unless you force it then you have to buy a new distributor. The distributor drive has a slight off set to it so it fits one way correctly and one way that does not bolt down like it should and often break the distributor if you force it to fit

BE CAREFUL putting it on! The drive tang on the distributor shaft and the slot in the face of the camshaft are offset... the distributor will only fit ONE way... if it does not engage properly or you get it 180º off and then tighten the mounting bolts... then you will bend/break the breaker plate/front bearing assembly!

BTW, what did you figure out/fix with the broken copper strip problem?

I made one but still won't start. I was concerned when I reinstalled it the rotor would be pointing towards the correct plug. For example if I took it off and the rotor was pointing towards plug number 2 when I reinstall it does it have to point to number two. I guess if it only goes in one way then it would be right. My cap also has deep grooves cut in contacts wondering if inhave the wrong rotor

You should be able to bench test the distributor with an ohm meter before putting it back in. Points closed, 0 ohms resistance, points open, infinity.

The rotor should not touch the contacts inside the cap. Were the groves in the old cap cut by metal to metal contact, or were they eroded away by spark and corrosion?

Again, assemble it on the bench and see if it turns freely. I doubt that the rotor would be strong enough to cut the terminals, usually if it touches, it breaks.

Like others said, the distributor will only go back in one way. Look at the end of the shaft and the end of the cam, the driving slot is offset to one side. It won't seat fully unless it's in correctly. If it's been bolted down wrong, it's probably broken.

The new rotor made grooves right away in new cap. I can't see if it's all lined up when reinstalling it because it's a front mount it seated back to the motor and when I tried to turn rotor once in tractor it wouldn't turn so I assume it's lined up. I have 6 volts to coil but not spark to plugs I tested using an old plug and grounding it to motor.

Rotor only fits on one way but yes if it was pointing at the #2 nipple it will need to be pointing at it for the off set tang to fit
