My 8n was running rough replaced coil worked for a while then would not start. Pulled offdistributor to check points. Points where not opening. Replaced points distributor cap rotor. Installed distributor and still wouldn"t start. I am getting 6 volts to coil but no spark to plugs what now. Any ideas.

6 volts at coil with the point open would be correct but if the points are closed that is not correct so good chance you new points need cleaned. Many new points have a coating on them so as to protect them and you need to clean that coating off

I think I left out the copper strap does it attach to the same side of the screw as the condensor or the other side of the insulator then to the metal bands of the points. It fell our so not sure if copper strap touches metal band on points and terminal of condensor.

Going by memory since I try to stay way from the front mounts but the copper strip should be such that with the points closed the condenser and points are grounded. The coil system work such that when the points open it unloads the coil so that you then get spark to fire the spark plugs

The metal band goes between the points terminal and the insulated screw. It must not touch the inside of the case.

You do know it's easier to pull the distributor instead of trying to work inside the black hole behind the fan?

The short copper strip is supposed to be permanently attached to the insulated terminal where the condenser connects, and the other end gets screwed to the insulated terminal on the points.

If your strip fell out, it has broken off at the upper attachment point.

The fix is a new breaker plate, and since the quality of those is not always so good nowadays, probably the best thing to do is "farmerize" it... make a new strip from the copper strip on an old set of points, or use a short length of insulated wire with two eyelet terminals, carefully tucked out of the way of moving parts (the cam and the rotor).

All that matters is that the upper terminal (that the coiled "spring thingy" hanging down from the coil contacts) and the insulated terminal on the points get electrically connected, by a method that doesn't short to ground.
