1967 John Deere 4020 In-Frame overhaul questions

I am planning on doing an in frame overhaul on our 1967 JD 4020 with the 404ci Diesel engine this spring. I noticed in the description of the overhaul kit said that it includes main bearings.
-How are you supposed to replace the main bearings while the engine is in the tractor?

They make a tool that sits in the oil hole and you turn the crank and roll them out. I have had good luck without the tool by using popsickle sticks and the plastic putty knife and push on them to get them started out. I think I loosen all the caps first to get the crank to come down a bit.
Make sure you go the right way as one side has the anti spin tab.

if you have to ask that are you qualified to overhaul an engine? If your counterbores are pitted which is not uncommon on a 4020 your inframe plans will go out the window, it"s about $1000 to bore out and sleeve the counterbores

Take a look at the YouTube video "Crankshaft Bearing Roll-in". It gives a pretty good description of the process. My Oliver manual shows the process using a cotter pin in the oil hole to remove/replace the bearing.
Crankshaft Bearing Roll in

I've heard of bearing roll out before, just didn't know if they made a tool for it. And FYI, I have experience with engines before, so yes I am qualified.

I would really plan to replace the sleeves and check the oil pump gear. The bearings on our 4020 were pretty good after 7000 hours. The oil pump drive gear was bad, which required the cam being pulled.

Check out what you need before planning an in-frame.
