Oogah Horn Spinning Too Fast

I decided to add a 12 volt "oogah" claxton horn to my Farmall "A" tractor since it has limited use around the house and has that large hole where the hydraulics are on the Super A. I bought the unit at Harbor Freight on sale for $10.99, so yes It's a cheap one.

I bolted it up to the tractor and decided to wire it to the battery to test it out and see what it sounded like. I used standard 16 awg wire and when it sounded, it seemed as if it was "overpowered" and spinning too fast and loud. There was less "Ooo-gah" and more like "O-gah". I plan on wiring straight up from the light switch as a power source and to a push button to activate it.

What can I do to "slow" it down and keep the horn motor from spinning so darn fast. It says for 12 volt use only and my tractor has a 12 volt conversion. It just doesn't sound right when I tested it on the battery.
 
You could try a light bulb or ballast resister. I have found those horns just like you to hit the button then let off and hit is again for the correct sound. Yep got on under the hood of my pick up
 
I did think about trying a ballast resistor, but it says on the horn "For 12 volt Use Only". Wouldn't it reduce the power to 6 volts if I used a ballast resistor?

It's not a big deal but I would rather it sound a little better and it seems like it might wear the motor out quickly due to it spinning really fast!
 
I have one on my 76 F-150, and to be honest, I'm not sure if it is 6 or 12v, but it works fine. I am sure that it was made in the USA. I have one that is a 6v., I had it on a 6v VW.
If I'm not mistaken, some applications use a horn relay. I would consider this, or at least check out the possibilities.
 
Yes it would drop the voltage some but it would also slow it down and unless you sit and hold the button for a long time not likely to burn it out
 
I've got a couple of the HF ones. Mine are 12 volts direct,No resistor needed. Use a quick responding momentary contact switch (push and release, no latching). Use multiple taps on the switch..short and long, not one continuous push. A little practice and you should get a pleasing combination. Try two short and one longer to start
 
This might sound like a funny explanation, but if you put a resistor in there it might only rev fast enough to go AAAA but not fast enough to go OOOO, and if it can't rev fast enough to go OOOO it can't go GAAAA when it's coasting back down. The original Model A horn will act like that if the battery voltage is lower than 6V. JIm
 
i used to have an old 6v ooga horn.. I ran it on 12v using a low value high wattage ballast resistor. worked fine. just had to play with resistor values.

I suspect a low value high wattage resistor will work for you as well.
 
Only one of those sounding horns on a Model A that I had any experience wasn't electric. It worked off of the exhaust pressure/gasses.
