My 8N gas tank has rust and harden old gas. Am restoring tractor and need advice on how to clean tank out so I can use it.

Best way is if you have a local radiator shop take it to them and have it boiled out. If you do not have one then maybe some matratic (sp) acid but be careful with acid it can cause some deadly fumes and explosive gases. My self on most tractor I do little to clean the tanks out and run them with the correct filter/screen and sediment bowls and over time they clean them self's up

Unless you just really want to keep the factory tank, why not invest the cost of cleaning and the guesswork of if the rust is going to come back as holes, into an aftermarket tank? They're around $135.

I cleaned mine out with electrolysis then power washed the inside at the car wash. I painted it and three weeks later found a leak at the seam. I didn't want to fool with a fuel leak over the engine so I bought a replacement.

An old guy told me to fill it up with apple cider vinegar and let it sit a couple days(off the tractor ). Said it's acidic enough to eat at it a little. Vinegar was cheap enough so I tried it. Then drained it all out except 1/2-1 gallon or so. Put in a couple handfuls of 3/8ish nuts and kept rotating it. It did clean it up. Don't know if the vinegar helped any but it didn't hurt. I was also told after anything acidic is in it, to put a mixture of baking soda and water in it to neutralize it. If I could have bought a replacement tank for $100, I'd have done that.
