1974-75 John Deere 830, metal shavings in hydraulic filter

I have a 1974 or 75 John Deere 830 and the hydraulic filter kept stopping up with metal shavings, and now the hydraulics have quit working. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could have caused this, and an estimate on parts needed to repair it?
thank you!

Sounds like it may be time for a tranny pump. Just hope it has not ruined the front pump as well. Hard to give an estimate for repairs because you never know the damage until the tractor is split.

What kind of oil has been dumped into the transmission?
99.99% chance the final drives have to be removed then new brake disks and pads installed. Then flush, flush and clean, clean , clean?
What is the rest of the tractor worth? You will have to pencil out what repairs on an old tractor leaves you with. Vs the sale price and repair costs invested into another tractor.

(quoted from post at 23:37:34 12/27/13) Why did you keep running it until it quit rather than finding the cause right away?????

Good point. Could have caught the problem before it became much worse.
I don't understand operators who operate an obviously defective machine until it grinds to a halt.

it should have had brakes long ago Jd saw fit to put 0.20 of brake lining on each side of a .25 inch disk pull the trumpet houseings and look
not a cheap fix

Hi
Got a customer just gone through this now with another brand tractor. $12 of oil he never put in cost of parts he now needs $ 5000. value of this tractor if this issue is fixed $15000 on a good day, plus gonna need more work and tires soon if he kept it after! Dealers don"t even want it in trade so worth nothing as is.
Replacement tractor which is supposedly better, than what he had $45.000 and will shortly be sitting in his yard, from what his wife told me.
so thats something like the kinda deal someones gonna have to think about. Seems round us something to replace/ update older tractors is worth big money now ,and not much choice either.
Regards Robert
