Adding a waterline heater

So waterline heaters are supposed to be added to the lower coolant line and should be placed where the coolant line is vertical so the heated coolant can rise into the engine. However, the clearest spot on the lower line on my '63 MF 50 (Perkins) is horizontal. would that be a problem?

Photo attached shows red arrow pointing to desired location.

Heated water rises, so that's why you are supposed to install it in such a way that the heated water will rise into the engine, rather than be wasted in the radiator.

It looks like the hose drops down ahead of your intended heater location, to the bottom of the radiator, so I believe installing the heater where you propose would work... the heated water would move to the block rather than the radiator.

That being said, why not use a block plug heater?

I just looked at my Zerostart catalog... their part # is 3100013.

Book says it installs in the right side of the block, with the element pointed down.

Thanks,Bob, I'll look at the hose again.

I like your suggestion on the block heater. To answer your question, however. I feel much more qualified in cutting a rubber hose and inserting a coolant heater (I've cut a rubber hose before) than in popping out the freeze plug (which I've never done). But I'll definitely give that serious though-

The heater that Del used is the only one that you can use. unless you have 5/8 heater hoses. Also when you install the heater they need to point in the correct direction. I haven't use one in years. dont get that cold here in WA state Dale
