I have a 6 volt farm international and have a 12 volt coil what type of ballast restior do I need in order to use the coil

If you have a 6 volt electrical system, you need a coil that has ~1.6 ohms primary resistance. Generally speaking it"s called a "6 Volt coil" and it needs no additional resistance. If you have a 12V Coil that says "12V use with an additional resistor" this is basically a 6V coil that requires a resistor IF IT IS USED IN A 12 V ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. Confused?
A "real 12V coil" has ~3.2 ohms of prinmary resistance and does not need a resistor if used on a 12V system but it cannot be used on a 6 V system. It will generally have a label that just says "12V" and never mentions any reistor.
So The easiest way to check the coil you have is to measure the resistance of the primary(measure between the two low voltage terminals on the coil). If it has a resistance of ~1.6 ohms you can use it on your 6 volt system. If it measures ~3.2 ohms, it won"t work on your 6 V system.

If its a 6 volt tractor YOU NEED A 6 VOLT COIL PERIOD and NO Ballast. If you use a 12 volt coil the spark will be weak,,,,,,,,if you use a 12 volt coil PLUS an external ballast THE SPARK WILL BE EVEN WEAKER,,,,,,,,,,If you use a 6 volt coil PLUS a ballast the spark will be weak,,,,,,,,,,,
