would using muriatic acid to remove rust from an inner tube wreck the tube?

I don't know, I have never tried it, but I would not put muratic acid on a tube that I wanted to keep. I think I would try using some penetrating oil or even soak it in soapy water for a day or two.

Muriatic will not harm the rubber tube. Just be sure to keep the acid away from the brass valve stem (the acid will destroy the metal almost instantly).

Also when finished, neutralize any acid residue left on the tube by washing it thoroughly with a baking soda + water solution.
