Broken stud in the head

Pulled the head off the JD B to replace the manifold. Used a high speed cutter to cut off what used to be nuts and removed the manifold. I heated the head around what was left of the studs and melted wax around them. Vise grip was useless, but at the bottom of the tool box was my ity bity pipe wrench (it's about 5 inches long). I put that on the first stud and tapped it with a small hammer and it broke loose as did the second and third one. I was proud of myself and maybe a little cocky when I got to the last one and went at it with a bit more vigor, bad words were said after it broke off a little below the surface of the head. Now what?

Lay a washer on it that's smaller I.D. than the bolt, then arc weld it to the bolt on the inside of the washer. Now lay a nut on the washer and weld that around the outside. If you have to go to a larger washer on top of the first washer and weld that on before you go to a nut,do that.

Hopefully, the "weld a washer to it" trick will work.

If not,it"s a pretty simple job to blow a stud that large out with the smoke wrench.

If it was mine I would have had it drilled out and threads cleaned with a tap before you would have got washed up and to your computer. If you didn't run. Just drilled a broken allen bolt from a mold inset last week Monday. I didn't time it but was less than a half hour from the time I went into the shop until I was reassembling the insert in the mold. Finding the center and holding on center is the only real concerns. Just can not get in a hurry getting the starting dimple on center. Not something you eyeball. You measure all four ways until you have the dimple on a measured center. That may sop up a couple a minutes.

Find someone in your area with a tig welder....they can heat stud up till cherry red with tig, once in all red they can set a nut on the stud even if broke off inside a little, make shure they weld nut and stud with stainless filler rod....when completed when 3/4 of instide of nut filled in, tighten 1/4 turn and back out....;)
