Massey Ferguson 390 transmission/diff clunk.

Massey Ferguson 390 4wa. (1993). 12 Speed shuttle. The tractor clunks as if it has jumped a cog on the diff or gear box. It does this randomly but normally when under stress either when hard down hill engine breaking or tight up-hill/ downhill turn. Sounds similar to turning the 4WD switch off when under load. It does not do it in 4wd at all and I don"t think it does in reverse or when diff lock is activated.
I try to use the tractor only in 4wd as I'm concerned the clunk may do permanent damage. Could the diff be so far out of adjustment that it skips a tooth?? Any suggestions much appreciated.

Some of these tractors had 4 wheel braking, where when you braked the signal to the brake lights would engage 4 wheel drive, thus the back brakes were operating through the 4wd to the front axle. The 4wd on these tractors was operated through a dog clutch which could stay connected until the time was right for it to disengage then it would disengage with a clunk. It sounds to me that is what is happening on your tractor....but see what others say.

Thanks Sam, I believe you may be right. I have only just bought it. Easy enough to confirm by disconnecting the break light switch when I get back to the farm. I appreciate your time. Grim
