John Deere B shifting problems

So it won't shift to high range across the bottom. I have a scar on my forehead where I walked into the steering worm out in the middle of the bottoms when I was in high school. You have to take off the steering wheel then the front cap then take the front plate off the steering box and screw the shaft out the front. Then you can take the the bolts out of the gear quadrant and lift it up. The high, low range can be moved back to the low side. Be careful moving the gear lever across when it shifts the high, low range. Are the bolts tight that holds your gear lever?

My John Deere 70 gas wouldn't shift. I think I was pulling it out of reverse and the shifting rod with the ball on the end came out of the channel it was subpose to be in. I took out the bolts around the big casting that has the shifting pattern. Then I unbolted the hood support near the rear of the gas tank right above the govenor. Took the bolts out which hold the hood to the dash. Loosened up the bolts at the front of the hood - side ones came out. Lifted and supported the hood/gas tank with some blocks. Raised the big casting just enough by hand to get the shifter with the ball back into the proper channel. I did not take the hood/gas tank or grill off, or pull the steering rod. This is a working tractor. You may not want to do it this way if it was in excellent show room condition as it could bend something or gouge the paint. The way I did it took less than 15 minutes.
