has anyone had occasion to install an oil dip stick in a farmall M tractor engine and if so how was this accomplished.

M&W (and perhaps also Heisler) made dipstick conversion kits for the H/M. It replaced the upper petcock in the side of the oil pan. I have a couple Super M's, also a Super H all with them - they work well.
I've also seen a couple M's where the boss on the block ahead of the oil filter was drilled and a dipstick fitted. Not sure whether they were a manufactured accessory or home made.
