cleaning engine block

I had to tear down my 3 cyl diesel because I spun a rod bearing. So the crank is at the machine shop, and while I'm waiting I was wondering if I need to clean the engine block? Will there be a problem if I don't? All input appreciated.

Age means a whole lot more than number of cylinders, LOL. No way I would put one back together without at least spraying it out good while upside down. The rebuilding shops soak them in a hot alkali bath for a couple of days. I use my pressure washer through the jacket holes from different angles, with it close to upside down. It has appeared to me that crud accumulates a lot worse at the back.

On my Ford 8N, I took out all the freeze out plugs and then had it hot tanked. when I got it back I looked inside with a inspection light and there was still crud in back, so I took a flexible brush and poked it in there and then with it upside down I blew compressed air in with a ¼" copper tube wand going in and out all openings. . It looked much better then.

if it spun a rod bearing, i would pull it apart and clean out all the oil passages and pump. pull the cam and lifters too. if it has bits of bearing in the oil gallery, it wont last too long.

Hi
I did a 3 cyl Perk last winter very similar mess to yours.
I took it down to bare block, de greased it blew through all the ports and cooling passages with 120 psi air.
If it's not 30 below out I usually pressure wash them to , and dry/ lightly oil before flash rust sets in.
This Perk block then went to the machine shop for checks, Guy took one look at it and said I guess there is no point hot tanking it, Looked better than he could get it!.
If it doesn't need machine work and all the plugs are good , you can do it your self if you got spare time.
I have never had a block hot tanked here, and never had a problem with the motors after re building .
Regards Robert

Some of these guys are not "up to speed" as to how a lot of machine shops do this noways... Caustic hot tank solution (read "lye") and oily waste are a disposal liability/nightmare, and the current procedure is to BAKE the block at a controlled temperature, basically reducing most of the mess to dust.
