I'm starting to look over a JD Van Brunt grain drill. The gears, chains, etc. are caked with old grease. What is the best way to remove the grease so I can see what's going on without tearing everything apart? 409 works on the lighter stuff. Can I put diesel in a spray bottle for the caked on stuff?

I use oven cleaner a lot to remove old grease and stuff. Nothing fancy just cheap dollar store oven cleaner.

No. I might be able to get access to one. I'd be a little concerned about breaking something. Do you have a suggested pressure?

Like watching TV, whittling a wood chain or painting an image of your pet. Get a soft stool, a putty knife, a pocket knife and spend an evening pealing it off thinking how nice it will look when you get it cleaned up. Tell your wife you will taker her to a nice place to eat when she is done.
You ask what the best way not the fastest. :)^D

(quoted from post at 20:59:15 10/21/13) Oven cleaner/lye on CHAINS?????

The proper word rather than /lye would be sodium hydroxide, and yes it works very well on CHAINS too. If one were to leave it for days instead of the recommended 5-10 minutes there is the potential for the sodium hydroxide to attack the steel. One should also always relubricate their CHAINS after cleaning. When I used to compete in off-road motorcycle competitions, standard CHAIN maintenance was to clean the dirt off before relubricating.

engine spray degreaser.. the foamy kind.... followed by manual removal with brush and scrapper.. followed by simple green.. followed by some water.

if it was sturdier.. I'd say pressure wash..
