The above tractor will only run smoothly with the choke pulled out. With choke in, runs erratic and backfires through air cleaner. Rebuilt carb to no avail. With carb set by book, it won"t start.

You either have weak spark since a rich mixture burns easier the a lean one of a carb problem. Your spark needs to be a blue/white and jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. If you have that then make sure you have a good steady flow of gas out the carb drain plug for say 3 minutes. Catch it so as to look for water etc. If you have that then good chance you missed something in the carb and all passage ways need to be sprayed out and also have a piece of wire etc run threw them. I use a torch tip cleaner tool to ream the passage ways out

Thanks for the info. I did use a tip cleaner to clean out the jets. Could the float be misadjusted? I did check it with specs and it's OK. could the timing be off ? It has electronic ignition.

orget timing & keep looking for a fuel/air problem.

I had problems with my 1958 Ford 801. Cleaned and rebuilt carb. twice but still had to run with choke 1/2 out. I gave up and sent the carb to Denny's Carb Shop and they rebuilt the carb and the tractor is running great. That was about 10 years ago. Money well spent.

Took the carb apart and adjusted the floats. Runs great after
a lot of tweaking on the jets
