VH4D bench start continues

Well, been at it for about an hour so far I fixed the fuel pump issue and she is spitting fuel into the carb. I didn't change any timing or anything just sort of looking things over and hand turning the engine and looking at the X on the flywheel and also listening for the snap of the rotor and here is what I have , it only snaps at 5:00 and 10:00 , 5:00 is def number one that is confirmed, I defiantly have spark, compression at all 4 cylinders and spark however, I did notice something new when I get my jumper hooked up and turn the engine over it seems not as free, seems like the jumper can barely turn it over and the rotations don't sound the same there are some noticeable spurts and coughs , so maybe find a stronger battery source does this sound like she is ready to come alive?

Remember at this point it's timed per the book no matter where cyl number one is , I turned it over by hand until the x was at 12 which piston number one was say 3/4 of the way to TDC BUT it was not all the way to TDC so if it doesn't start as is , I guess forget where the x is and get number one at TDC maybe leave mag as is with x in site window and try it then?

So not sure what to think, I'm hoping for the best just waiting for my battery jumper to recharge so I may not be able to try again until tomorrow, I don't have a battery for the machine yet most of my budget went to getting the engine done. Earlier today it just seemed to have a lot of compression if that makes sense, it had it before but it would just turn over no real signs of life, now it def seems like it has more compression taking my jumper down quickly and spitting and coughing some so hopefully that's a good sign? Back tomorrow with more info but if anyone thinks she is ready to fire from my description please let me know.

Scott:

I would guess when the X is at 12:00 you are a little past TDC. Remember the impulse coupling snaps when the X is on the centerline of number one and three cylinders. The piston has to be at TDC when the spark is delivered. Make sure number one piston is coming up on the compression stroke then slowly turn engine over by hand and watch for a spark when the X vane reaches the centerline on number one cylinder. If you do not have a spark re-time your Magneto until you do have a spark. It is not that hard to do.

I have tried to contact you via email but have never made contact .I think I can walk you through this if you want my help.Ralph

It may be timed a little early & firing against rotation. Mag should trip when the X vane is on the center-line mark. Does it?
