Pertronix problem on 1964 Ford 2000

I just wanted to give people a heads up on a potential problem. I just recently installed a Pertronix Ignitor kit on my Ford 2000 to get rid of the points. The installed kit worked wonderfully when I fired it up to check after installation. I went out the next morning and had a "crank, no start" issue. I immediately checked voltage all over and everything was fine. Checked for spark at the coil and there was none. I took the distributor cap off and then the dust cover. Imagine my surprise when I found the shaft portion of the Pertronix kit welded to my distributors dust cover! They had made contact so lightly that there was no indication externally. The amount of contact was sufficient to cause enough friction to melt the plastic and as it cooled, it became fused together. I contacted Pertronix and the rep said that some of the parts were made "a little taller" than others and I should cut the center out of my dust cover to allow more clearance for their part. On this model tractor, the dust cover can"t be eliminated because it is "shimming" the distributor cap a small amount off of the distributor body. Pertronix is sending me a replacement part for free, but I wish they made this potential problem known from the beginning. I"d still give the Pertronix kit a thumbs up though for anyone wanting to purchase it. Thanks for reading!

I've never encountered a problem of that sort with the conventional points and condensor and my tractors all start easily and run great.

I hauled out a cord of sawed firewood with my Ford 640 today.Still 6 volts with point ignition.Starts quickly, put new points and condenser in it 26 years ago.Wish I still worked as well as the old tractor.
