Vh4d close but no cigar

Well here is what I have, number one cyl at around 3/4 of the way to TDC , flywheel at 12 :00 , the X on the mag is seen thru the sight window, new plug wires in the correct order 1342, I primed the fuel pump , took the fuel line off the carb and didn't see any gas coming in, so I still need to figure that one out, I sprayed starting fluid into the carb, gave it a crank and it turned over but didn't start. Back to the drawing board I guess. I won't have anymore time to spend on it for about a week or so, just wanted to post an update. I'm wondering if not being all the way up to TDC has something to do with it? If I take it all the way I won't be at 12 I will be more like 2-3 o clock

I'm tempted to take it to another shop if I can find one but if I'm close to getting this to run I would rather not spend the money. Plus finding a shop to take this on may be hard? I'm almost at the end of my rope with this

You are close to getting it to run. My explanation of what you are seeing is this. With X at 12:00 o'clock, key on top, the piston is over TDC and in the combustion (power) stroke (the flywheel rotation is clock wise)as it should be and the mark on mag gear in view in sight window. I believe this for the following reason, in the picture ( fig# 11) X is at 12:00 o'clock, the key is on top and just above the gear driving the camshaft is a small dashed circle with a label stating it is the number 1 crank-pin to which the # 1 piston connecting rod would be attached. The X, key and crank-pin remain in a straight line as the crank rotates. The only time the piston reaches TDC is when the crank-pin is directly under the center of the cylinder. As explained on pg# 14 and fig.13. My advice is to get the fuel delivery system straightened out first. Then pull the plugs and put a squirt of oil in each cylinder and roll it over( this will increase the compression temporarily ) then reinstall the plugs and see if it fires. Good luck, my e-mail is open if you would like to talk send me a number and the best time to call along with the time zone you are in, I'm in the eastern zone...

Bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke.
Use a long plastic straw and watch the straw rise until it quits rising. Then see where your flywheel keyway is located. If it's off either the cam gear isn't timed to the crankshaft or the
magneto gear isn't timed to the cam gear. How much teardown was done on this engine? Hal

thanks , I too think I'm close. I wont be able to fool with this until the weekend of the 28th then I have all day. I will need to figure out the fuel issue, check for spark , little oil in each cyl and crank her cross your fingers. Will post results in a week or so thanks for the help.

If was in time the piston would be at TDC. They're all connected the crank, timing gear and mag gear. Hal

Piston will still be at TDC when mark lines up EVEN IF the cam timing is all messed up... The is NOI easy explanation as to why the piston would not be at TDC when the marks line uip, and cam timing certainly doesn't explain it!

cam gear is driven by the crank gear. Cam gear drives the governor. Crank gear drives an idler gear & that drives the mag gear.
