VH4D timing question

Here is what I'm sure of and what I have,

1. I'm 100% sure I'm at TDC on #1.

2. The keyway is directly in line the x on the fin.
3. When I'm at TDC the x on the fin is at 1:00 O'clock.
4. When I'm at 12:00 as the book shows I still have another 1/2" of piston that needs to go up to reach TDC.
5. At 10:30 I'm just starting to rise on the stroke.

Question- Should I install the mag with the x of course showing thru the site plug at 10:30, 12:00, or 1:00? Or do I have a bigger problem? Scott

When No1 piston is at tdc on the compression stroke, is the flywheel keyway at 12 o'clock? Here's another picture that show's that. Hal
PS: If it's off your shop may not have time the
mag gear with the cam gear.

Hal, The key way is more like 1 maybe 1:30 so that makes sense , maybe if we leave the cam gear alone and advance the mag gear just a little it will work? Not the best solution but we are only talking a little bit that it's off.

You can try it and if it doesn't work I would call
that shop to tell them they didn't time the mag and cam gear correctly. Hal

You should've taken that engine to Rod's Machine Service in Jarretsville. It's easy to get there
from Parkville. Take 83 N & exit at Rt 429 toward Bel Air and turn right on 23. His shop is on the left as you enter Jarretsville. Hal

If I can't get it this time I think I need to take it somewhere to someone more skilled then I . Most people don't want to " clean up someone else's mess, I tried when I first discovered I had some issues. I will try sometime this coming weekend and will post the results. Thanks for the help.

Jo, I should still set it at 12:00 even if I don't have TDC ? At 12:00 I'm at about halfway up the cylinder wall. So I won't be at the top of the stroke so to speak, does that matter? Should I try it anyway?

I should still set it at 12:00 even if I don't have TDC ? YES, all engines fire before TDC this one fires at 23 degrees before. At 12:00 I'm at about halfway up the cylinder wall. So I won't be at the top of the stroke so to speak, does that matter? NO Should I try it anyway? YES..

One question , I think I follow and you both seem right so if im almost at TDC on number 1 and im at 12:00 if I hand crank the flywheel until I hear a snap in the mag I should be around 3:00? im fine with checking that and understand question is at what piston number after the snap should the rotor be pointing at ? In other words am I allowing the rotor to snap into number 1 or snap into number 3 clockwise looking at dis cap order is 1342 does that make sense? sorry for the headache but I refuse to give up on this
