Ford 8N Steering problem

I have an 8N it has the Saginaw screw and recirculating ball nut type steering system (After Serial # 216988). I was bush-hogging today, had to stop, and, has usual, I cranked the wheel to make sure it won"t roll down hill (parking brake works it's just 2 easy to release). When I cranked the steering wheel over, I felt something slip, now I have, like a 3/4 to a full turn in steering wheel free play, and then it catches, same when I turn it right or left. Anyone have an idea what's wrong? I inherited this tractor, but I'm not too mechanically inclined, I just love this tractor!

Does the steering wheel rise and fall as you steer it back and forth? If so, you have lost a bearing on the worm shaft, typically the top one.

Hi Bob, thanks for the reply, no, the steering wheel does not rise and fall, just excessive play when I steer right or left, but in one spot in the steering wheel travel. When it happened it felt like something broke, maybe a thread or tooth in the shaft and ball nut assembly or a tooth on one or both of the sector gears. I guess I was hoping it could be a simple adjustment. Seems like I need to tear it down to see exactly what broke.

I still bet you find a bad thrust bearing.. even though you report -0- wheel rise / fall when steering lock to lock.

the sector gears teeth and teeth ont he ballnut are MASSIVE. even with a chip out.. it should still steer.

to get excessive play like you have. you'd have to have lost a sector adjust stud.. most likley on the forward doubl;e sector.. IE.. the stud or the teardrop/oval pate would hav had to strip.. thus allowing excessive backlash. OR, as mentioned.. loss of a thrust bearing.

lastly. if the top bushing at the top of the steering column, under the steering wheel died, it will let the steering wormshaft drift tot he front of the column and create excessive backlash from the ballnut to the forward double sector. longshot.. but i have had an NAA do it.

these issues are best address on the real FORD forum where the ford GURU's can help you.

that said. steering gearbox repair on these simple manual boxes is easy and done via cookbook ( manual ) is a no brainer...
