Ok guys I think I'm close I found a problem with starting my Wisconsin vh4d after being completly rebuilt she failed to start up, would turn over but no start. I took plugs out using old wires and nothing, got new wires and boom I have spark from each wire, still no start? At this point I tried everything I had gas in bowl, combustion, spark. Then a few guys on this site said to check timing and I did only to find that the silver tab on the rotor was pointing 180degrees in the wrong direction. I backed out the distributer to to allow me to spin the rotor worked fine. Now everything is back together I set the timing correctly but have no spark from any plug? I'm thinking thru days and days of trying different things maybe the plugs are shot a couple were really black?

I cleaned the plugs with a wire brush and sandpaper and still nothing. By rotating that rotor would the wires be wrong?

Take the cap off and see if the shaft is actually turning. Perhaps it is not engaged.
I probably would have just moved the wires on the cap rather than turn the distributor.

Do you have a magneto? See which way the rotor rotates when cranking. If it rotates CCW your firing order is 1-4-3-2 and your plug wires need to go the correct plugs. The rotor should rotate when cranking. Hal

If you didn't get this gear timed that may be your problem. Hal

Hal,

That's the gear that the distributer attaches to correct? So if I'm right that would be the timing related to the fan shroad? What I did with that was found TDC of cyl. Number 1 by turn the engine over by hand. And then making sure the cast letters on the cover match the marked fin. I think at this point so many parts have been replaced I'm about 3800.00 into it so what's a few more hundred for a new mag, dist cap, points, condensor ect. I am concerned however once I get the replacement having to do anything concerning timing, now that the large gear is timed I hope I can just get the new mag and distrib and pop it in and be done?

Here's a picture of the Mag's cap. When No1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke your rotor should be pointing to the No1 plug wire in the upper right. If you look close you can see the number 1. There's probably nothing wrong with your mag since you were getting fire. Buying another mag isn't going solve your problem. Note the direction your rotor rotates. Hal

If you look close at the numbers on mag's cap your rotor rotates CCW as the firing order is:
1-4-3-2 Bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. If the mag is off the engine rotate the rotor until it points to the No1 plug
tower on the cap.

Your plug wires would need to go to the correct cylinder.

10-4 Hal I seem to be on the same page that's exactly how it's set up. Maybe my plugs are just bad? When I first checked for spark It was weak but there, then I tryed many different things that may have fouled the plugs? I still would amagine getting some kind of spark but she is dead.before I spend money for another mag I will fool with it more.

I think so, not too sure how to check. I mean I turned the engine by hand found TDC of number one which is on the left closest to me from the fan shroud , but after I find that am I done then just make sure the rotor is facing number one on the mag and just slip the mag in?
