Bench Starting

Hey all,

in addition to my other post concerning wiring my old skid loader im restoring I was wondering if anyone knows if I need to do anything else to bench start this engine ? I have it set up with gas going to the fuel pump, I have spark, battery jumper positive on the starter , negative on the engine tin cover or block, negative wire from the mag to ground out for stopping it. At this point it does turn over but no signs that it wants to start. Any help guy's would be appreciated.

Give it a little snort of starting fluid and see if the engine will fire. If it does I don't think you're getting gas into to the combustion chamber. Try holding your hand over the throat of the carburetor to see if there's good suction. Poor suction indicates low intake manifold vacuum. Hal

Yeah I tried starting fluid before and got nothing maybe one time it coughed and spit a little bit. I never however checked the suction at the carb, will do after work today and let you know thanks for the advice.

Take a spark plug reading now and then during the process, so you know what you ae getting for gas.

Check your compression. Did you remove the mag?
If you did the mag may not be timed correctly. Hal

Yeah the mag was removed and was tested and I was told the timing was set correctly, I don"t trust the machine shop 100% so I will need to check the timing . I have good compression

I now have a few things to check out over the weekend thanks to you guy's I appreciate it. I have to work Sat and Sun but should have a few hours to wrench on things and will post the results on Monday sometime. Thanks again Scott

Bring No1 piston to tdc on the compression stroke then see where you rotor is pointing. Which engine is this? Is it a Wisconsin? Hal

It's a Wisconsin vh4d gas engine, I'm in Parkville md . I'm going to double check the timing but funny thing last night I took one of the plugs out and turned the engine over and no spark? Last week when I got the engine back from the shop I had spark . Not sure what's going on but I am starting with the timing and go from there.

Ok I think this is correct, the rotor silver tab is pointing at number one. But now I have no spark from the mag? I'm wondering if I burned something up trying different things the past few days?

Which way does your rotor turn when cranking the engine? If it rotates CCW the firing order is
1-4-3-2. Don't run any battery voltage to your mag. You may ruin your coil. A mag has magnets that create a hot spark when they pass by your coil. Hal

Hal,
At one attempt about a week ago I did run a positive wire to the mag not knowing , do you think I fried it?
