I have a 1967 john deere 2940 tractor that is giving me gray hair. I have a 1967 john deere tractor 2940. I need the spec.s for the front axle. I am trying to repair it and it is binding up when I tighten up the cap bolt. I don't know if I have the right bearing.

Already Tried:
I have taken it to a machine shop and they cant figure it out either

iirc the 40 series were built 1979 and later.
Have you checked the JD web site parts section?
What is binding up, what cap bolt?

we have taken it to john deere and they were unable to figure it out. We think we have located the problem though. The new part we ordered for the front axle was machined wrong, which is what is causing the binding. we are now getting it redone. if that doesn"t work I will be back on here again asking more questions with pictures this time to show the issue. Thanks soo much for responding.

Well John Deere only made the JD 2940 for three model years, 1980, 1981 and 1982. The JD 2640 was made from 1976 to 1983.

So either your model number is wrong or you have the year wrong.

Also there are several front axle options on several of the JD utility tractors. Some of them use different spindles too. So maybe the part is not made wrong but you have the wrong one for your tractor.

I would make sure of the model and the year of production. Then you can make sure you have the correct part. IF you have the correct part and it is made wrong it is under warranty. JD will replace it. I would not be modifying a new part.
