MF TO-30 Loss of power and Backfiring

I have a TO30 that has two issues:

1. The tractor is back firing while running, a loud popping sound. It almost sounds like a dead cylinder. I"ve changed the points, condenser, plugs, wires, rotor and cap. I"ve checked the timing it is correct.

2. The tractor also loses all its power when the PTO is ingaged and the tractor is in gear. You can run just the PTO with the tractor in neutral just fine or the tractor in gear with no PTO. You try both and there is no power.

Any Ideas?

popcorn can mean lean main needle.

lack of power can mean lean main needle :)

tug choke and see if it stopps popping and makes you go with pto....

have you checked timing?

have you checked the advance mechanism?

rotor fit on dizzy shaft snug or loose?

compression test (dry/wet) ?

I would say if you ran a compression check you may find the problem. It could be a burnt valve or blown head gasket. Both of those will cause a dead miss. Check the compression and let us know what you find.
