Looking for Square Bolts! Please Help

I am restoring a JD Model 52 two bottom plow on steel. Every single bolt is trashed and nearly rotted in half. The person I am restoring it for requested we replace with more Square head bolts. I contacted Fastenal however grade 5 5/8" 4inch in length are nearly 16 bucks each, through fastenal I am looking at almost 700 dollars for just bolts! No nuts or washers. I am wondering if anyone has other ideas on where I can get a good square bolts ranging in length mainly 1/2 or 5/8 in diameter. Or if they have a bunch they are willing to sell. If I do have to buy them at that price it will break my budget, also I wanted grade 8 but they are 30 bucks a piece. Do you think grade 5 will be good enough for the frame bolts and stuff if I do have to resort to buying them? Thanks for all your help.

Mike

Have you tried mcmaster carr? They have 1/2"x5" for 6.90. Granted they are only grade 5, but it says they are min tensile of 120K psi.

Also look for a fastener store. I have one in my area that I can get 2 of this and 4 of that.
Square bolts

(quoted from post at 04:17:56 03/05/13) Grade 5 is overkill for a plow that will get very little use. Grade 2 will work just fine.
In heavy yellow clay does it matter? It isn't mine but I figure he will probably do one or two acres, but its like I said HEAVY. It would help my budget if I used twos but I want to be sure it wont rip apart. Thanks for all your help guys.

Maybe this guy can help:

He always has square-headed hardware at IH tractor shows.

You might have to tell the client that there would be an additional charge for square head bolts and explain why. They will have a different appearance anyway as the heads will be physically thinner.

Try Production Tool .

Several years back I bought several boxes of square head bolts and nuts. They didn't have them cataloged at the time but my sales person ordered them for me. I had to take full boxes because they wouldn't stock them at the time anyway. I still have some of the smaller bolts but the larger bolts had fewer in a box and I didn't get a lot more than I needed for what I was doing.
They were a little more expensive but not all that much or I wouldn't have popped for them.

McMaster Carr lists 60,000 tensile strength bolts as Grade A. That must be a change as 60,000 used to be the Grade 2 spec.

That should sure be enough for your plow bolts.

Thanks for all the help guys, I either probably going with Norm, or Blacksmith Bolt, still waiting for a price call back from Norm.
Thanks again,
Mike

You never thought of the Deere dealer, did you?
5/8" X 4 square head bolts are readily available there for about $3.37 each, depending upon each dealer"s price! They are even Grade 8! If you go to jdparts.com and search "By Part Specifications" they have quite a variety of square-head bolts still available. If you look in the Parts Catalog (updated in "63) for the plow, they show hex fasteners.

I'm able to obtain all the square head fasteners (bolts) at the local Lowes store (can probably find the same at the Home Depot).
