International Harvester 444

I have an IH 444. I had problems with the tractor not starting. I was told from former worker that he had same problem a long time ago and it was the shutoff solenoid. I took off my carburetor and sprayed gum cutter to clean carb. Still black inside but looks much better. I replaced Automatic Shutoff solenoid. Now, when I go uphill tractor seems to loose power and stall. What could be causing this problem? Carb is getting gas. I would appreciate any insight. Thanks Frank

May be a heavy float inside the carb. Does it smoke? I would take a compression check on all the cylinders, it sounds like your compression is low. I've done it and have seen many people pull the carb apart thinking the problem is in there when the compression is really the problem. An old timer once told me 40 years ago, never do a tune-up on an engine until you check the compression first.

An engine needs 4 things to run,

1. Fuel
2. Air
3. Compression
4. Ignition

Thanks for the info. I will do a compression test this weekend if it warms up. I will also empty the carb via screw at bottom of carb and see if that helps. Do you know the compression value I should be looking for? I have a manual somewhere but it would take a while for me to find it. Also, Is there a way to check the float? Thanks so much for your help. I greatly appreciate it.
