Hi All,
I have a '64 John Deere 1010. It starts rough but then seems to run ok once it warms up. I've replaced the coil, plug wires, distributor and rotor. I put in an electronic Ingition and rebuit the carb too. if I run it for awhile and shut it off, then it won't start - even with startign fluid. After it cools down for an hour or so, it start righ up. I'm at a loss - any thought would be helpfull.
Thanks

Check your spark before you start it and then check it again when it gives you problems. Spark at all 4 plugs needs to be a blue/white and jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. Also when was the last time you serviced the air cleaner it maybe full of water and dirt

Plug gap? Are the plugs solid core such as an
Autolite 3116?
What is static timing at cranking rpm?If more
than a couple of degrees before TDC, she will kick
back. Stuck advance weights or over advanced
initial timing are all too common.
What is coil voltage while cranking?

Just thinking out loud here. How's the rocker clearance? Have you had the tapped cover off? I'm just wondering if you've got some valves that just aren't quite closing, causing low compression and low vacuum so it isn't pulling the gas up from the carb like it should?

That was my first thought also. If the valves can't close, there will be very little compression.

I know nothing about John Deere's..but I do know
that when a magneto equipped engine won't start
when hot, it can be a coil going bad.

Thanks all for the replies! I'm thinking there may be an issue with the carb. I found that if I run the tractor at all and shut it off, it won't start agian - unless it sits for awhile. Doesn't mater if it's warm or not. I saw in another posting that the carb could flood the cylinders with gas afterward it's shut off. i got the tractor running and then shut the gas off and let the tractor stop on it's own. Once it did, I turned the gas on and tried to start it - and it started right up. Any ideas on what I could have done wrong on the carb? Its a TSX-860.
Thanks!

Couple things come to mind. #1 float set wrong. #2 if you replaced the needle seat and the needle the seat may not be tight enough. #3 the needle you put in has the rubber tip and if it does it takes time for it the get a set in the rubber so it seals like it should. I always preset the needle by setting it in the seat and then tapping on it a few times with a screwdriver handle etc.
