I have a Ford 4000 6 volt gas tractor that starts well when the tractor is cold and hasn't run for a while but it won't start when the tractor's hot and has just been run. I start the tractor, run it for a while, shut it off and when I try to start it, no luck. It will pop start right away when the tractor's hot but it will just crank and crank when I try to start it with the ignition button. Anyone have any suggestions. I'm tired of parking on a down hill slope!

Since you say 6 volts I am assuming it is a four cylinder. Any way your best bet is step by step trouble shooting. Check for gas by removing plug from carb float bowl check for 30 seconds good flow of gas. Check spark from a plug to ground You need a strong 1/4 inch blue spark. I suspect that your problem is compression. You will need to get a compression gauge for that. They are short money. Look for 115 psi.

I'm go'n with ignition. Heat in the coil makes for weaker spark. It fires(barely) when its cold, but when its hot the starter cranking takes just enough juice away from the coil or ignition system, it don't want to fire. Thats why it will fire when you push start it.

If you replace the coil and it still doesn't fire when hot, I'd be doing a full tune, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser.

It's possible a faulty float/needle and seat is letting a little too much fuel in when it sits and don't want to start when hot, but I'd bet ignition first.
