what color should I paint Farmall B rims. Yesterdays tractor has Aluminum and McCormik Gray available. I am new at restoration and was looking for tips

the rims were originally galvanized. lot of guys will use rustoleum aluminum paint, gm ralleye wheel paint, or just about any silver that looks galvanized.

If that tractor has ever been repainted ay an IH dealer, the rims would have been painted with aluminum paint, and probably done with a brush. I use Tisco brand paint on mine. They have what is called silver/rim paint. Basically it is aluminum paint, but is a little bit brighter than Rustoleum aluminum.

I painted the rims on this A with yellow lacquer
in 1975. I used on the plow too. Hal

I painted mine with farm and fleet aluminum, looked to much like a barn roof. did it again with IH silver argent. looks good now

It appears to me that most rims were painted silver like the ones that I have bought new. I have never seen a rim with remnants of galvanizing on them. I'm not saying that they weren't, but I've never seen them. I don't care for the aluminum that rubs off on your fingers, so I use a silver or argent, which looks just like the paint on a new rim.

I've redone the rims on 3 different Farmalls, ranging in age from 1940 to 1950. On all 3 tractors I used a cup brush on an angle grinder to remove all traces of old paint, right down to bare metal, and I never found even one small indication that those rims had ever been galvanized. Not on the outside, or on the inside. I can only assume those rims were painted aluminum from the factory.

I just painted a set of rear rims on an Allis WD45 and I went to Case and bought their aluminum paint. You can use hardner in it and thin it for spaying. It was around $45 a quart though...

When I did my D17 rims I wire wheeled them then sanded them down. I sprayed the inside with Rustoliume cold galvinsing compound (2 good coats). The outside was primed heavy and painted with a brush (2coats) with aluminum paint and let it set for a day when a good coat with a spray can to hide the brush marks and to give it a good shine. It was alot of work put they turned out good. Bandit

Pete, I think that your picture of painted silver looks much closer to the new Unverferth than the one painted aluminum.

This is just a working tractor that I bought a used set of tires for that needed the rims painted, So I figuared I might as well do it right. It took as long to clean and paint the 2 weights as it did to paint the rims and centers. Getting the weights back on without messing up the paint was not easy! I dont think they look to bad. Bandit

Some yahoo that has never attempted to do something like that just can,t think of how hard it is to get it all back together and keep the good look. Really a neat set of wheels with weights.
