OK, I got the carb right. I had another almost identical carb adn noticed there is a spring whcih holds the flap on the choke butterfly closed. There was a new one in the kit I bought, so I got it right now. Thanks for the advice! I admire the durable construction and simple design of these carbs: cast iron and brass, mostly, and though in horrible-looking condition, a simple kit and some cleaning can get them going.
