I have a farmall super A that I bought last week, tractor was running except the altinator wasn't working, two days ago I went to start it with the battery fully charged it turned over twice and then nothing. I got my test light out and I am getting power to the starter, and then I noticed the 12 to 6 volt ballast rister is smoking and the coil is hot. So I decided to rewire the entire tractor because it needed it wires were original and in bad shape plus I put a new built in resister coil on it,and wired the alternator up because the previous owner didn't have it wire right all. I used 10ga wire which is over kill but I wanted it to be right. Now I have power to the starter still and power and the lights switch but the tractor still won't turn over and the new coil is still getting hot. Please help if you know what it might be. I'm sure I wired it right I have check the wire chart over and over and I am getting power in all the right places. Thanks!!

A coil will in fact get pretty warm if the points are closed and the ignition is on and the engine is not running.
As for the starter can you turn the engine over by hand??? If not then the starter may be locked up in the flywheel which is very common and could well be your problem. Farmall's are well known to do that for some odd reason

Adding to Old's comments, since the starter only needs big battery cable to its switch & a battery ground to operate, you can forget ALL the other wiring as far as being able to get starter to turn the engine.

Loosen the bolts on the starter and shake the starter to see if the bendix drive is stuck in the ring gear on your flywheel. If that doesn't help pull the starter and use a pinch bar to see if the engine can be rotated. Hal

Reall no reason to unbolt the starter to unjam it. Just put the tractor in the highest gear and push rearward on a rear tire. rock it to the rear until you see the radiator fan move, the starter will be loose.

Thanks guys alot for the information, took the starter out and it"s not working very good, I tested it once I got it off and it only works when I tap on the back so I am going to take it tomorrow and get it rebuilt

I have found many times that only works once in a while. Unbolting works 100%^ of the time
