Stuck Clutch on a Ford 600 series

Hi All,

anyone have a suggestion for unsticking a clutch without splitting the tractor. I"m working on a Ford 600 series 4 speed that sat for several years without being exercised. The clutch appears to be stuck engaged. Clutch pedal feels OK, but everything is spinning when I try to put it in gear. Could it be rust on the splines? Or could it be surface rust on the clutch sticking it to the flywheel? Thanks for any suggestions.

A number of ways that might fix it. #1 block the pedal down for a few days. #2 start it in gear the highest you can and do this only if you have the room to drive it around safely and drive it till it frees up and if you can hook something on behind so it has to pull harder keeping your foot on the clutch pedal at all times. #3 pull the starter off and then pull the plugs out and spray the clutch area with brake cleaner spray and at the same time turn the engine over so you get the whole clutch area. If you look in the archives in either of the ford forums this is addressed many many times

If the excellent suggestions do not work, you might try taking the starter off, place a 90 degree bent sharp bar between the pressure plate and clutch plate, and then have some one strike the bar with a hammer. I have freed up several stuck clutches this way. Not sure if it will work on a 600, but it is worth a look. Please email me if I can be of additional help.
Thanks !

All,

Thanks. I used some of the suggestions and read through the forum archive and got the clutch freed up today by blocking the clutch down yesterday and putting it in 4th today and tugging on it a bit with a truck. freed up and seems to work good. Thanks again.

To make sure it does not happen again it is a good idea if your going to park it for any time at all the block the pedal down. Doing that does not hurt any thing and I have an 8N that has the pedal blocked down right now and I have not run it in at least 9 months

On any tractor that is going to be stored, more than a few weeks. I would block the clutch pedal down so the clutch does not rust/stick again.

Metal particles on the clutch facing were rusted to the pressure plate on my 640.You have a bad problem.Tf the dumb A Ford engineers had left an access hole on the bottom of the clutch housing life would have been easier.
