Springfield gas tank liner

I have a springfield garden tractor gas tank that needs some attention. It several pin-holes in the top and a bunch of rust in the inside. Do I need to use a special solder to the holes, just a standard plumbing solder? Also, what would anybody reccomend as a liner? Sounds to me like Red-Kote is a good choice. Any Reccomendations? Thanks

I would fill it with sand and small gravel and shake the dickens (rust) out of it. Then maybe some muriatic mixed with a little water to get the rust out.If the fumes don't kill you then give it a good rinse and let it dry thoroughly and do the RUST Kote You can use standard plumbing solder and flux. It must be rust free where you solder it and by the time you get that far the holes may be to big.

Get all of the loose rust out you can the coating will bond better. I usually put a couple of hand fulls of steel nuts in the tank to shake. That way I can get them out with a magnet. If the holes are just real small then I just put duct tape over them and coat the inside of the tank. Then when it is dry just remove the tape and paint the outside of the tank.
