just put my engine rebuild of my massey 65 to work and it seems to be smoking bluish ehhaust, i thought it would burn off but it has not, whats up. i did pistons/ rings /sleeves / bearings /valve job.also set the timing to what i thought was done correct. why does this colored smoke appear

Those new rings have not yet seated in. Probably need to work it HARD for a few minutes.

and if that doesn't work - start to worry.

Blue smoke = oil burning, no two ways about it.

Was it smoking before you rebuilt it? Does it smoke constantly?

There's a chance it's coming in through the valve guides - you didn't mention doing any head work/new valve seals. That usually shows up intermitttently though.

Worn valve guides will usually result in blue smoke only for a few seconds after starting the engine, and then it clears up.

I agree with the others.

If it"s a gasser and if he smoke appears heavy at idle, and less at higher powers, it"s the valve guides. If it"s a diesel and the rings have been worn in (~ 10-20 hrs of operation through the power range)then it"s probably oil past the valve guides.

help!!! my terrible blue smoke has stopped ,but has been replaced with haenous white /greyish smoke,very heavy., i hope the neighbors dont call the epa. it has also lost significant power and seems to be knocking and ideling rough, this has all happened after 7+ hours of light tedding on flat ground. i was advised not to do guides by the machine shop that did the valves .,something about losing the centers. so has my winter project become a nitemare when i really need it most?. i dont do alot of haying in the winter, after all this is vermont

I would stop running it with white smoke and check for water. Could be very bad.

That would be water in the cylinders.

Something's definitely wrong there.

I'd pull the head and see what's up.

Do a quick compression test first before removing the head to see if you can identify where the main problem is.

Could just be bad/incorrect head gasket. Could have been getting oil in that way - followed by water later.

Did you retorque the head bolts after initial run? Try that first, if you still get white smoke pull the head, minimum head gasket is leaking, perhaps flipped upside down..or bad head gasket... I'd hate to think what else could be wrong.....

May have a sleeve sitting high. Did you check each one or did you just pound the sleeves and pistons in then torqued down the head?
Re-used or new head fasteners? Some old fasteners won"t take a 2nd torquing and provide sufficient tension.
Don"t putt around with a rebuild, take it out and work it.
Must have been some sort or miss communication with the shop about the cylinder head. Install new guides then cut the seats true. Couldn"t imagine having the head off a gasser and not replace guides, new exhaust seats if required and a valve job.
