I have a 1949 JD Model A, with generator. I have had the Generator rebuilt twice. Two new Voltage
Regulators. I have rewired, from the Generator to Amp Meter. I cannot get the Amp Meter to show either a charge or discharge, unless I short a wire. The Generator is showing 13.3 volts and 5 amps on a test bench. I have one wire from the battery side of the regulator going to the Amp Meter. Another wire, from the battery to the other side of the Amp Meter. Both wires are hot with electric current. The Amp Meter is brand new and I borrowed another Amp Meter that also did not show anything. I even tried a new battery. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also I should have stated, that the field wire goes to the light switch and is hot. the rest of the wires,on the generator, were rewired by the generator rebuild shop.

OK, but where wre wires from gen/reg tied into the ammeter? Nothing else should connect to ammeter side(terminal) with battery. All charging current, loads, etc. should be conected to 'other' ammeter terminal, i.e., the terminal that is not connected to battery.
 
I took a short wire, from the
battery to the field on the regulator
to polarize the generator. I'm going
to try it again.

Thank you for your reply. I printed out, what you
sent me, and I will see what I can do in the morning. If I turn on the lights, the ammeter
shows a slight discharge. If I engage the starter, it doesn't show anything. I installed a brand new 12 volt battery, about a month ago. All new wiring was installed on the generator, by the people, that rebuilt the generator. I have a three post voltage regulator on the front and one post on the back. The VR is new. Both post on the ammeter are reading electric hot. The field wire from the VR goes to the light switch. When it was on the test bench, it showed 13.3 volts and 5 amps. Would it still need to be Polarize? I do have a Mag with positive ground.

If its a 3 terminal (BAT FLD GEN/ARM) or a 4 terminal (BAT LOAD FLD GEN/ARM) THERE SHOULD BE NOOOOOOOOOOOOO WIRE TO THE LIGHT SWITCH !!!!!!!

On many 4 terminal VR's BAT LOAD FLD are side by side while GEN/ARM is underneath or off on one side all by itself

If its a 2 wire (BAT GEN/ARM) Cutout Relay then the gennys FLD does wire to the light switch.

SOUNDS LIKE IT MAY NOT BE WIRED RIGHT !!!!!!!!

It may be polarized at neg ground at the shop but now youre at Pos ground so be sure to polarize BEFORE STARTING
