JD 60 Starter Grinding

My starter grinds more than it starts - ring gear is decent, starter gear looks OK. What can I do? There is no adjustment in the starter postion, no do I think there is a place for shims. Help!!!

Forgot to add, this is a John Deere 60 2 cylinder.

The bushings are probably worn out in the starter.

It sounds like your bendix drive is not engaging correctly and therefore spins and doesn't advance forward to interlock with the gear on the flywheel. My suggestion would be to take the starter off the tractor and clean it up real good. Check the bendix drive as well as the bushings to make sure everything turns and moves freely. To remove the starter you will have to take off the plate from the bottom of the tractor. Then remove the flywheel cover and undo all the linkages that run from the starter itself to the foot pedal engage. There are three bolts that hold in the starter that will need to come out to remove it from under the tractor. Be careful as the starter is not light be any means. Let us know what you find!

The starter location isnt adjustable BUTTTTTTTTT the flywheels location on the crankshaft (end play runout) is !!!!!!!!!!!!

Two cylinder Deeres often end up in the same location after shut down and if the flywheels ring gear teeth get worn its possible to relocate the gear so shes startign where the teeth arent so worn.

Also the starters drive mechanism may have some problems that the drive gear isnt extending as far outward as it should.

Excess flywheel end play run out or a faulty starter drive are my guesses

I finally had the chance to pull the starter last saturday. The starter drive is not gummed up at all (free movement). As far as the bushings are concerned, the bendix gear has 0.015" of total side play on the shaft. The bushing the shaft turns in looks good (no detectable side play).

I have noticed that the starter gear does not move all the way to the end of the housing (lacks about 0.125"). In addition, the spring moving the starter gear seams weak to me.

Another bit of info - I have replaced the fly wheel / ring gear with another identical unit. The grinding occaisionally happened with the old one, but did not start with the new one for a while after I installed it (the old flywheel had issues with the splines on the crank).

At this point my guess is a combination of the starter gear not going out far enough and the weak spring. Any other words of wisdom?

One other point - I need to replace the brake shoes as well (this is a 60 Standard). Will I need to remove the platform to get the brakes off?
