Farmall Super A will not restart when hot.

My Farmall Super A (6 volt, + ground)will not start after I"ve used it for a while and the engine is hot. Is this a bad coil on the magneto or something else?

Some diagnostics: Check fire, fuel and air.

I carry an extra spark plug in my tool box so I can check for fire when tractor fails to start. My super C started running rough and then quit. It wouldn't restart. No fire and coil was too hot to touch. I swapped coil out and problem resolved.

Another time it developed and intermittent starting issue whether it was hot or cold. That ended up being the condenser.

Check for fuel flow by unscrewing the drain plug on the carb. Probably not an issue in your case.

Check the air cleaner. Back in the day, when I had no building to park a tractor in, rain would collect in the air cleaner oil bath cup and cause a flooding problem. It would start fine but after it warmed up it would run rich and not want to restart easily when warm.

Check valve adjustment. If thet are on the tight side the valves will get too tight when hot.

Growing up, we had a couple AC tractors do that- they would start instantly if pull started. Magneto rebuilds cured both. Just another option.

When the engine quits running pull off a plug wire asap and check for fire to your plug. If there's no fire replace the condenser. If that doesen't fix the problem you probably need a new coil.

If you have fire you probably have a fuel problem. Check the flow from the tank to the carburetor. Should see a full stream of gas and if that looks ok pull the tube fitting where your gas line connects and look for a screen that may be plugged. If that screen isn't plugged clean your carburetor by soaking in carb cleaner and blowing out the jets using air pressure. Hal

My first guess would be the coil - when they fail, they often stop working when hot - and, often get hot when they stop working.

Feel the coil - if it's suprisingly hot, that'd be enough to suggest a new one.

I agree with JMS. We had a farmall "A" hand crank for years. Had a belly mower on it. IF you killed it mowing it had to be pull started cause cranking it by hand wouldn't make it start. Pull it ten feet it popped right off. It was a weak coil. The coils always have the date on them. The one we replaced in it was dated 1939. We replaced it in the 1980's.
