How do you tell between a small scoring mark and a crack?

I have a 1943 john deere B...... it has been getting water into the crankcase and i finally took it apart..... I did find a crack in the head but it is between a water jacket and a stud hole.....also i found what appears to be either a crack or a score mark on the top of the number 2 cylinder, question is, how do i determine weather it is a crack or a score mark?

Take it to a motor repair shop and have it magnafluxed.

A Dye / Penetrant kit may verify but Magnaflux would be a sure test,
