53 NAA Restore

Hi Friends. I'm a newbie starting on a painting restore of my Golden Jubilee. All sheet metal is off and wire brushing everything else before pressure washing the chassis. Question about brake backing plate. Hubs, brakes and levers are off. Should I just primer the backing plate since I'll need it back on and hubs etc. to roll it out for washing ? Would rattle canning the backing plate red be OK or just take it all back apart prior to priming and finish painting, which will be late this summer I hope. I also would very much like to communicate with anyone in the portland area who would like to elmer a newbie. Thanks Bill

1953 makes it a Jubilee not an NAA. Very close to the same but different models of tractor. As to restore if he is not bring the whole and I do mean whole tractor back to factory spec he is just fixing it up. Yep I believe in what the definition is to the letter

That is in fact a yes no and sort of thing. I have had both a Jubilee manual and I do have a NAA manual and they the manual where in fact different

Very true but have you ever sen the big poster in the old Ford dealerships that has pictures of all the models??? If so did you notice tat the Jubilee and NAA where both on them and they where listed as different models and as I said the owners manual for the 2 are in fact different saying they are different models

i've seen other variations listed as different models too... jubilee was just a marker name for an aniversery... there is more in common with a 53 and 54 than the 9n / 2n and they are darn near the same.. but admittedly different models, even if maily via designation.

a hood medalion is the major differences.

a few mid stream changes like a bushing/bearing in the flywheel/clutch.. minor diff at the top cover blank plate.. etc.. sn location difference..

Yep I know it is a very fine line of definition as to the Jubilee and the NAA being different models

Thank you for all the kind replies. Just to reiterate, the post is to inquire as to what to do with parts that hide painted surfaces during cleaning and prior to finish painting. Such as brake backing plate, all front axle mounting hardware, brake lever lock dogs etc. And this tractor is a 1953 Golden Jubilee NAA 34312.

I didn't get that out of your original post. I am almost done with a 901 that I wanted to do a real nice job on. I took a lot of parts off, that as you say, are in the way. I put fasteners in groups in slots cut in card board. I cleaned parts as I removed them, and gave them all acid treatment. I then hung all the removed parts and applied the epoxy primer to everything including chassis and fasteners at once. I primed many smaller parts by dipping them before spraying all the larger parts. I then applied three coats of orange XX1 red. I then put most of the removed parts back on and scuffed everything, since this time I was outside the cure window. I then applied two more coats of red, then started over with the gray sheet metal. It is very time consuming, but it depends on what you want to achieve.

Thank you Showcrop. I will continue on doing as you suggest. Another question for the group is what to do with the fender brackets. They are bolted and riveted on. There is minor rusting between the brackets and the fenders so I'm wondering what to do about the rivets. Removing the rivets can be done but will be impossible to replace them. And replacing them with carriage bolts looks like the only alternative. Any suggestions there ?
Bill

On my 960 I replaced the rivets with carriage bolts. Dip them in phosphoric acid for a minute to etch the plating before you prime them.
