Rusty Steel Bits in Tire Bead

Greetings, I mistakenly posted this in the Paint Forum today, should have posted it here.

I bought used tires that must have sat on a wet/rusty rim for years. The tire beads are encrusted with bits of rusty steel from the old rims.

Is there a way to get that rusty steel to un-embed itself from the bead? So far I have been prying it off in small flakes with a screwdriver and a chisel, and it is slow going. Thanks. Dave

Any method you use that is more aggresive than what you are doing now could probably damage the rubber.

i've used a black 3m pad on a drill to do it.. but you have to be carefull.. if a tubless tire you can get a lil careless and be ok.. but you really don't want to damage the rubber deep enough so that the bead can rust.. after it gets rusty.. it's dangerous as it can seperate...
