WD starter problems

Starter on my WD would spin and grind metal every-once-in-a-while. I first thought that I had some broken teeth on fly wheel or starter gear. Took it off and can see no real damage to either the fly wheel or the starter teeth. The other starter I put on works fine. What would keep the bendix from fully engaging?

That starter makes the circut by grounding to the bellhousing, make sure its a good connection. It looks a little rusty, somefolks like to run a ground wire. Dan

worn bushings will make em grind and drag.

excess lube will make em drag and not engage, and thus grind upon trying to engage.. etc.

It looks good from here! Does the gear spin out on the threads by hand easily?
Could be brushes, fields, armature, etc. just not getting RPMs up where they should be.
