I bought an old riding lawnmower that had gas left in it. has varnished up the tank inside, getting ready to try and start it but want to get the gunk out of it first. any help with this???

Two ideas come to mind depending on how bad it is, you can reseal it with 3M gas tank sealing product "About $30 a quart" more than you would need and pricy. Or you can go buy a new tank of which they are plentiful for just about any size and model. I just recently bought one for my older riding mower for $16. If you want to spend all the time to actually clean it only to find out it is rusted under the "Gunk" at the bottom, then end up buying a new one anyway, well? How much is your time worth Vs convenience. Is it a quality restoration or is it an every weekend tool?

I would remove the gas tank and wash it out with lacquer thinner or acetone like others have said. I would also clean the cutoff valve and dispose of fuel lines and filters because they will have the varnish also. You might even have to vat the carburetor if the fuel valve wasn't shut off.
