I have a ford 800 with sherman 5 speed when going down hill it likes to jump out of gear. Any advice on repairs would be appreciated. Thanks

Sherman 5 speed????????? Never heard of one of those. I know of the overdrive the under drive and the combo and the combo is a 3 speed. So what do you have?? Maybe you mean you have the 800 series tractor with it being either an 850 model or the 860 both of which have a 5 speed transmission but it is not a Sherman. Also the Sherman only work with the 4 speed transmission model like the 840

Maybe i was misinformed on the transmission. It is for sure a 800 and is for sure a 5 speed thats the best i can say

Ok so you can help us help you do this. Lay your right hand on the starter and your left hand on the clutch pedal. Look down and you should see a flat spot sort of under the battery and carefully clean that with carb cleaner and a rag. You should see 2 sets of numbers. The top one is the model of the tractor and the lower one the serial number. By the way the 800 is a series of tractor with many models of them like the 840 which has a 4 speed and the 850 which has a 5 speed but no live PTO and the 860 which has a 5 speed with live PTO

Knowing that it is a five speed tells me what tractor you have. One of mine popped out of third once going down hill. Low on the left side of the trans, a little below oil level, is the head of the bolt that holds the spring which puts force on the detent plunger which helps to hold the linkage in position. These are known to get weak and worn and they are still available from CNH

okay i will check tomorrow. It is my Uncles tractor so i have just been going off of the info he has provided me. i appreciate the info and i will get the details to make this easier for all. thanks

That means it has a live PTO by way of a 2 stage clutch. That transmission is not one I know well. If you use the info you now have and post a question down in the Ford forum and explain which gear or gears it pops out of the guys down there should be able to point you in the right direction

if you are lucky.. it is the detent plunger. otherwise it's a bit of wear inthe tranny. and not an easy fix.. though a bunji cord or spring with a hook does a bang up job.. I have one on an old beater 850 that jumps out of 3rd unless you bunji it in.
