I tried putting a new rod sleeve in and stopped half way in fear of wrecking it. Should I heat the Rod up first? Help!

This is a job for an automotive machine shop. They have to be pressed in and honed to the final size with rod bushing hone. They also need to be checked for bends or twists. You also need to have the big ends checked to see if the are the proper size and not egged. They can also be reconditioned. If you don't have this equipment you have just wasted your time and money.
