72 troy bilt tiller

Hi, just picked up a 72 troy bilt tiller, engine purrs! The lever on the outside of the tranny case to engage the wheels is so stiff that i have to use a hammer. Any suggestions would be most helpful, thank u

did you try to put a little p b blaster or penatrating oil on the spot where the linkage goes in to the case an try to work it back in forth

Try moving the tiller slightly when trying to engage the wheels. Don't use that hammer or you will be using the garden hoe. Hal

Check and make sure the transmission has the correct amount f oil in it. If in fact it is a 1972 model then it should have the Tuscheh (sp) engine on it unless it has been replaced. I own the one my dad got in 1972 and we installed a Koler engine on it years ago when the old one went bad

I put a 10hp B&S on this Troy Bilt back in 2006. I sold the 6hp Tecumseh engine. I gave $100.00 for the tiller. It has electric start too. Hal

Yours looks a lot better then the one I have but my dad did till about 2 acres with it every years for 3 decades. He had the transmission rebuilt in it 3 or 4 times but it still does the job I need it to do every summer. The fuel pump on the Koler engine has gone bad so I hung a gas tank up high so as to use gravity feed and that works just fine also

Look where that lever moves the slides - (Down and in front of the tires) Spray it with PB blaster or whatever and work the lever up and down.

Usually if you just rock the tiller a bit the wheels will move enough to let you engage the gears.
