i have a steering shaft out of a 50 ferguson with manual steering i want to weld it up and turn it back down i have a lathe mig welder and stick welder just wondering what to use if i use the stick welder what kind of rod

On a shaft like that I drill and tap the center to over 50% of the shaft diameter. Cut the threads off of a grade 8 bolt and screw the to part together. Before removing the shafts from the lathe I put a taper to form a V to weld the outside where the shaft screws together. I always use 7018 stick to weld shafts together.

shaft in my 8n broke.. had a pin turned to fit the ID of the shaft.. drove together after vcutting and truing edges and mig welded up, ground down to let thrust bearing slip over the weld.. been like that for ?10ys now.

the shaft is not broke just worn where the bushing run i want to know what is the best rod to be machineable

(quoted from post at 08:17:07 08/19/11) 6011 or 6013

yep either of those rods has more strength than the parent metal to begin with. 7018 will certainly work

Having the choice I'd mig it.
