heat gauge on MH44

I have a 12 volt battery in my 44, consequently I don't have my generator or any electrical stuff hooked up, just the starter.. my heat gauge shows right to the top at 220 even when not running.. is there a way to do a check whether it's the sending unit or the gauge.. or is it all one unit ? I'm assuming it should work even though no battery power is hooked up.. is this right?
I do have another 44 that hasn't been run for many years that I use for parts.. it has a gauge on it that shows 0, but it's not a nice clean gauge but is readable..
thanks in advance..John
